I had one instance in my live game this evening when the flop came down (A,6,6) and I had (K,3) in the hole. My opponent checked, as did I, and the turn came another ace for a board of (A,6,6,A). My opponent bet out quite heavily and although I felt my hand was the best, I didnt have the conviction to reraise. My opponent showed Queen high after I had folded.

In most circumstances I will not call a bet on the flop or turn, I am more likely to reraise if I feel I am in front. In this way you will gather further information to confirm or dispel your judgement of being in front.
The river is usually he safest time to call a bet when you feel you are in front. In most situations you will feel that you might be in front but still be concerned about possible bigger hands. With a raise on the flop or turn from your opponent, it is more difficult to call because you know you might be raised on the next round of betting.

The key point is that your opponents should at any given time, be either thinking the wrong thing about the way you play, or being very uncertain about how will play and primarily what you might have.

I feel you should take grat care to do this, preferably making unorthodox plays that do not cost you many chips, then showing them after. people I play poker with know that I might for instance, limp in with (A,A) with two players or less behind me, and they also know I might raise preflop with (7,8) from early position.
All in all, try and keep a tight hold on your own feelings, and be perceptive of the changes in opponents mindsets, and subsequent play.

www.pkr.com - With the tables broken to 2, and my aggressive plays beginning to backfire, I tightened up and considered my position. The blinds soon turned 10,000 chips into 7,000, and my situation was verging on critical. I had one orbit of play to double through in order to stand a chance, and as the hands went past, the big blind came back to round to me with (7d,8d).

Even though the player under the gun swiftly moved all in, I had no choice but to take my chance as I may not get another. I called, and the flop of (6d,9s,Qs) gave me an open end straight draw, although my opponents (A,Q) had hit. The turn brought another diamond, although not making my straight, but the Jack of diamonds gave me a flush on the river, and I was up to 14,000. Shortly afterwards I elminated the two short stacks on the table with (Q,Q), then (9,9), and we were at the final table.

I took 26,000 to the table, and made an excellent fold in the first half hour with (9,9) against what was shown afterwards as a (K,K). Players began falling until we were 5 handed and in the money, and I took a long time to decide after the chip leader had shoved over the top of a small raise. I had (As,Qs) and eventually folded the hand, seeing the big stack with (Ah,Kh) win the pot on the strength of Ace King high with no Queen on board. I eventually finished fourth, after the blinds ended up at 6,000/12,000 after almost 7 hours play. With 35,000 chips, I pushed on the big blind with (Kd,8d) and walked into (Kx,Qx). Overall though I picked up a nice amount of money for my troubles, and generally thought I played very well.

www.pkr.com - This argument is one that depends largely on the individual, but there seem to be ever increasing numbers of players saying they prefer playing online to live. Personally I feel the opposite, enjoying live games much more, but I can also see what there is to like about online poker.

The ease with which you can sit down and play, and the choice of stake and game are extremely convenient. But isn’t that just the point? That most of all what players prefer about online poker isn’t anything to do with preferring the play involved at all, but simply the fact that they do not have to leave their house to play. I think this is probably the case with many players who like to play online, and indeed there are even some who have never played in a live game before. There will always be certain players though, that prefer online play itself to live play. Although how they could feel that way is beyond me, they still seem to be in the majority these days in terms of where they play their poker.

Live play has always had so much more excitement personally, the ability to chat and joke with your opponents between games and enjoy a social atmosphere is one of the things that sets poker aside I feel, and it just isn’t the same with online play. Also I feel that if you are new to poker, you are much more likely to be given advice on how to play better after a live game than after an online one, certainly so in the case of where I play anyway. partypokercoml - Bounty tournaments are being added to the schedules of many poker sites these days, and are very enjoyable for players to participate in. The object of such a tournament, is to eliminate as many opposing player from the tournament as possible, although finishing in the prize money places pays money out too.

With bounty tournaments, often each player will begin with a bounty on their head, and when they eliminated, 75% of that bounty is paid to the player who knocked them out, and 25% is added to that opposing players own bounty. In this fashion, the bounty earned for knocking players out tends to increase, the further through the tournament you get.

This is an interesting style of tournament, as it means that you can effectively guarantee yourself some prize money in the early stages of the tournament, and then be ‘freerolling’ the rest of the way to the money paying positions. It also means that if you have increased the bounty on your own head by eliminating players, you will have more players eager to call your all in bet once your chipstack drops below theirs. Some bounty tournaments are run differently however and only pay out one large bounty payment for a pre determined bounty player.

These too are enjoyable, but personally, I prefer the format where each players bounty increases with each player he dispatches. This way, every player has a chance to win some prize money even if they only make it half way through a tournament.

www.pkr.com - Small pocket pairs are certainly not the worst of hands to be dealt, and if you are shortstacked it can be a relief to look down and see a reasonably solid hand in late position, that you can push all in with. I do not mind playing small pocket pairs, but I certainly handle them with care, as they can sometimes get you into a lot of trouble.

I personally do not usually raise preflop with them in middle or early position on a table which has around six or more players on it. If I am down to three or four players in an STT, then I will certainly raise with this hand, sometimes heavily, in order to try and pick up the blinds.

If you do this and find yourself being called, you know you could still get lucky and catch a set, or have middle pair when some low cards fall. If you have the courage, you could even push all in on a flop that contains cards eight or lower or thereabouts, because if you raised preflop, it is likely your opponent would call with high cards and will have not paired their hand.

This would be risky of course, and as a general rule with smaller pairs, I like to see cheap flops. If you manage to see a flop cheaply, the hand is quite easy to play from there.

Personally, if I make my set then I am looking to get all my opponents chips in, and if I do not make a set, I am likely to be facing overcards and will probably fold if raised. This is because if I have not raised preflop, I cannot calculate it to be more likely my opponent missed the flop with two overcards to my pair, even if the flop comes down with relatively low cards.

Almost any sport or pastime involving tournaments usually has some sort of qualifying rounds involved before the main tournament gets underway. The reason for this is of course to weed out the weaker opponents before the real action starts and is used successfully in many sports.

As we all know, poker is not the same as most sports, but there are certainly problems I feel, with fields being flooded with weak players, the main event at the WSOP springs to mind.

In this instance you can even get weaker players winning the event simply because they get an extremely lucky run. Jamie Gold in my opinion, falls into this category.

As the number of people entering the World series has grown over the years, so has the prize money, but the chance of a professional poker playing winning the main event, has diminished.

With such huge fields, every player needs to not get seriously unlucky at some point during the proceedings if they are going to win. Mike Matusow at this years main event is an example of a player who never seemed to put a foot wrong, but one moment of extreme bad luck finished his tournament. The longer these tournaments go on the more chance there is of somthing like that happening.

As much as I would like to say that qualifying rounds are the way forward, I can’t quite bring myself to believe that. I think it would alleviate the problem somewhat, but it would take somthing away from the poker world too.

Poker is the only game where anyone from anywhere, can sit down and play in the world championship and have a chance at the title. This is part of the magic attached to events such as the World series I think.
So I cannot say with confidence that it would be a good thing for poker to have qualifying rounds, but perhaps there is another fairer way forward. The tournament which determines the worlds best, after all, should not be largely filled with players who have little understanding of the game.
